Copy Details for Julius Caesar ([1695-1700])

SC #: 438.5

Location: Meisei University, Kodama Memorial Library

Shelfmark: MR 3104

Notes about issue: This edition displays the typographical peculiarities that Bartlett ascribes to the first of the four undated quartos. (The fourth of these dates to around 1715 and is therefore not part of the Shakespeare Census; it can be distinguished from the other three by the fact that it collates A-G4 H2, instead of A-H4 like all the others, and by presence of a three-line note about the location of the scene beneath the Dramatis Personae, beginning: "SCENE, for the Three first Acts ..."). This edition can be distinguished from the others by the fact that p. 19 is misnumbered 91. This edition has multiple states that differ in their pagination. Bartlett 1939 lists the pagination as follows, but other copies differ as noted in the specific copy: [2], 1, 4-18, 91, 20-27, 18, 29, 20, 31-40, 33-48, 57, 50, 51, 60, 61, 54, 55, 64. For a full discussion of the undated editions of Julius Caesar, see Emma Depledge, forthcoming work.
