Notes about issue: This edition exists in three distinct states: the first includes copies that were sold without Troilus and Cressida; the second contains Troilus and Cressida but without its prologue and with a redundant final page of Romeo and Juliet crossed out by the printer; the third includes a cancel leaf with the Prologue of Troilus on its recto and the first page of the play, reprinted from a new setting of type, on its verso. In none of the states is Troilus included in the "Catalogue" of plays.

Rasmussen & West notes: Augustin Daly (1838-1899), one of the owners of this copy, was a major American theatre owner and director. He built and owned the Daly's Theatres of New York and London .... Daly directed numerous productions of Shakespeare which were the focus of intense criticism by George Bernard Shaw. Shaw repeatedly savaged Daly in his reviews for cutting the text of Shakespeare’s plays and making what he viewed as inappropriate directorial choices, such as casting women in male roles.

Binding: The volume is stored in a brown slipcase which is coming apart at the bottom. The binding is burgundy. It has gold-tooled triple fillets in an inner frame, gold-tooled double fillets in an outer frame, and ornamentation at corners of the inner frame. There are six raised bands on the spine with gold-tooled ornamentation on the first, fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh panels.
